The MZD Connect is also equipped with a Wireless LAN connection. To use this, connect to your Home WLAN or a portable Hotspot using the Devices menu in the Settings dialog. If you are in North America or Japan, the WLAN adapter may be disabled (due to Mazda discontinuing the Connected Car features in these regions).

Windows 10, VirtualBox VM Manager, Ubuntu v16.04 64-bit
OR just Ubuntu Ubuntu v16.04 64-bit as the main OS.
Required Knowledge:
To Run: Ability to follow these instructions, create a Virtual Machine, use a command line interface, and basic understanding of git and bash shell scripting.
To Develop: At least one or more of: C, C++, JavaScript, Linux/Bash Scripting, Android, gstreamer(0.10 & 1.0).
Required Hardware:
Android Phone: v5+ with Android Auto App installed and USB Debugging Enabled.
USB Bluetooth Receiver: or built in Bluetooth receiver.
Part 1: Virtual Machine
If you already know how to do this or are already on Ubuntu/Linux skip to part 2 These are instructions for Windows 10 and Ubuntu 16.04(64-bit) but any recent Mac OS and Linux distro should work just as well.
- Create an Ubuntu (Linux) Virtual Machine and boot up Linux with a disk image from the link above |
- Give plenty of allowed RAM and Disk Space (you can use VDI Virtual Disk Image) and complete the installation |
- While the installation is running, you can set up your USB devices (phone and Bluetooth) to connect automatically in settings>USB. When adding a device erase all entries except for name, Vendor ID, and Product ID (you can delete Product ID field too if your phone is having issues reconnecting). Then after they are set up disconnect them until the installation is finished and the system reboots. |
- When Ubuntu is finished installing, try connecting your USB devices. In the menu under devices>USB there should be a check mark next to your Bluetooth receiver and phone. If there isn’t try to connect them, if you are getting an error you might need to fix your drivers like I did. I had to do this to get my USB devices to work Method No. 2 |
- By now you should have a fully functional Ubuntu Virtual Machine running with working USB drivers to use your devices. |
Part 2: From 0 to AA
Once Ubuntu is all set up this is the complete set of commands to take you from 0 to Android Auto in about 30-60 minutes:
Now you have the Android Auto Ubuntu Emulator Installed, every time you want to open the emulator back up you just enter the command:

To compile a headunit binary for use in the car run:
I hope this will lead to more programmers who did not want to bother installing a new operating system or spend a lot of time figuring out how to set up the development environment and whatnot to contribute to the Android Auto project. I tried to make these instructions as simple, clear, and straightforward as possible but if there are any ambiguities or you have an improvement or suggestion for this tutorial shoot me an email. To all my fellow HaXors out there Happy Hacking!
NOTES: You may need to manually reconnect your phone if it is disconnected by AA. You need to have your phone in MTP mode (you can try PTP as well) to make the adb connection properly. if you are having trouble connecting you may be using an incompatible Bluetooth receiver.

Project Description
What about watching movies in your Mazda car? Yes, now it is possible with Mazda Media Player! No modification to car infrastructure (and IVI system), no additional devices required – just one Android app and WiFi connection!
“Mazda Connect” is new Mazda’s infotainment system which has been added to almost all latest (> 2014) models: Mazda 2, Mazda 3, Mazda 6, Mazda CX-3 and Mazda CX-5. Thanks to powerful hardware (i.MX6 ARM) and well-designed GUI, Mazda’s Engineers have managed to make one of the most intuitive and easy-to-use IVI system on the market. Unfortunately, this system is not as good as really could be! Do you want to watch movies directly from usb stick on main TFT screen? Do you want to watch TV in your car? Do you want to set/read/monitor some additional values not available through standard interface? Just download and support development of Mazda Media Player!
Mazda Media Player shows that feature-rich IVI systems are not reserved only for extremely expensive luxury cars!
Download
Finally pre-alpha version of Mazda Media Player is ready to download. After many problems with Google Play Store I’ve decided to distribute Mazda Media Player app directly through my homepage. Next releases will be distributed in the same way, so please visit my website from time to time. Enjoy and don’t forget to give me some feedback at lukasz.skalski@op.plAndroid app source code free download. – especially if everything works well (info about model and firmware version will be useful) and also if you encountered any problems.

How To Use It
Please read this part carefully before you start using Mazda Media Player:
Download MazdaMediaPlayer_v031.apk (this file is no longer available – end of support!)
Create a ‘Movies‘ folder on your USB stick (folder name is very important because Mazda Media Player recognizes only this directory – please don’t create any sub-folders)
Copy your movies to Movies folder (Mazda Media Player supports *mp4, *avi, *.mov, *.wmv and *.mkv files extensions – tested mainly with H264 video codec and with MPEG-4 AAC audio codec)
Plug-in USB stick to Mazda Infotainment System
Enable ‘USB Debugging Mode’ on Android device – How To
Connect your Android Device with Mazda Infotainment System (more info how to setup WiFi hotspot you can find here: Infotainment System – Quick Start Guide – “SETTING UP A WI-FI HOTSPOT” section)
Launch Mazda Media Player and set IP address of your car – use default user and password values
Connect, choose movie and have fun :)
Notice
This is not official app of Mazda Motor Corporation!
This program comes with ABSOLUTELY NO WARRANTY. Use at your own risk and only if you know what you do!
Mazda Infotainment System has some issue with memory management and DMA allocation, so sometimes Mazda Media Player doesn’t work as should. Sorry, it isn’t this app fault – try once again later ;)
The software is provided ‘AS IS’, without warranty of any kind!
Watching TV/movies whilst driving is illegal in some countries – please check your local regulations before you use this app!
My Development Environment
After a few weeks of work on Mazda Media Player I had enough of sitting in the cold and dark garage :) Last week I decided to buy on Allegro (Polish online auction website) additional CMU unit. Finally I can develop and test Mazda Media Player sitting at a desk and drinking coffee – it should speed up MMP development :) Below you can find some photos of my new development environment:
